Ventilation tubes in middle ear effusion post-nasopharyngeal carcinoma radiation: To insert or not?
نویسندگان
چکیده
BACKGROUND Postirradiation otitis media with effusion (OME) due to transient edema and dysfunction of the eustachian tube is the most common radiotherapy-associated otologic complication in nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients. However, it can be seen in other head and neck cancers whose field of radiation includes the nasopharynx. Whether to insert ventilation tubes in these patients remains controversial. On one hand, ventilation tube insertion may lead to persistent otorrhea and permanent ear drum perforation; on the other hand, patients left with their serous otitis may experience hearing loss, aural fullness, tinnitus and dizziness. What is the best practice when dealing with middle ear serous effusion post radiotherapy? This review focuses on NPC (Table I), as this is the population in which radiation and ventilation tube insertion has been studied, but we feel the findings have widespread applicability in head and neck cancer.

Sonotubometry in children with otitis media with effusion before and after insertion of ventilation tubes.
OBJECTIVES To test the outcome of sonotubometric measurement in children with otitis media with effusion (OME) before and after insertion of ventilation tubes. DESIGN Eustachian tube ventilatory function was tested in children with OME. To test validity, sonotubometric testing took place before insertion of ventilation tubes (ie, glue ear) and 1 week and 3 months after grommet insertion (ie, ...

BACKGROUND Ventilation tube insertion is a common treatment for children with persistent otitis media with effusion. Parents are concerned about the morbidity of this procedure and the influence of ventilation tubes on daily activities. Permissibility of swimming is a question that is most often asked. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of water penetration through ventila...

Abstract OME is a Common disease in children. over than 90% of children in preschool ages experienced this disease once at least. Despite medical therapy about 10% of the OME patients won't improved and these are the group of patients who referred to as chronic OME patients.
